If you are an aquarium fish keeper, you will know that feeding is not as simple as it seems. The many things to consider in feeding aquarium fish that would require some research and advice from experts. In fact, feeding is one of the more important aspects in keeping the aquarium fish alive and growing healthily.
The first thing to consider is what to feed the aquarium fish as different types of fish have different requirements. The easiest thing to do is to purchase food that is specially manufactured for the type of fish that you are keeping. This normally comes in the form of flakes or pellets. For example, goldfish food is nutrient-rich as goldfish needs protein, carbohydrates and a very wide range of vitamins. It would also be wise to ask for advice from the aquarium store owner or friends who have kept or are keeping the same type of fish.
Besides the manufactured staple food, you should also add variety into the fish’s diet. You can include fresh vegetables like lettuce; or live food like worms and insect larvae. However, try to limit this to be occasional as it may disrupt the digestive system of some of the more sensitive and fragile fish.
Besides variety, supplements in the form of vitamins are also vital to the well-being of your fish. Vitamins can be added to the fish’s diet but including manufactured food that has specially added supplements. Another alternative would be to add a food rich in certain vitamins like fruits and vegetables. These vitamins help boost the immune system of your fish making them healthier.
Besides considering what to feed the aquarium fish, a feeding schedule is also equally important. It is common and good practice to only feed your aquarium fish once a day. Even then, only supply enough food that can be eaten within 2 minutes of feeding. Some aquarium fish (for example, goldfish) will continue feeding as long as there is food available making them sick and sluggish.
Over-feeding he aquarium fish will pollute the water and turn it toxic after a while. This is serious and is a threat to the life of the fish. As such, monitor each feeding session and promptly remove any access using a net or a scoop. You can also consider using special equipment (for example, a feeding ring) which provides better control is providing only a limited amount of food at a time to the fish. This reduces the risk of over-feeding and makes removing excesses easy.
Having aquarium fish as pets adds to the headaches of going on long vacations as unlike pets like dogs and cats, the fish cannot be sent away to a friends place or a pet-care center easily. If you are only going away for a short period of time (i.e. a couple of days), you can consider using food blocks that do not disintegrate or dissolve easily. However, these food blocks are only available for certain types of fish. If food blocks are not suitable or if you are going away for long periods, you should make arrangements for someone to come over to feed and take care of your fish. Make sure you give proper and detailed instructions as aquarium fish is much more fragile than your average pet.
Having mentioned all the above, keeping aquarium fish is still a very much enjoyable hobby for many enthusiasts and they find many hours of enjoyment watching and taking care of their fish. This makes it all the more worthwhile to invest the amount of time and energy needed to feed the aquarium fish.
